FAQ: WHY GET CERTIFIED?

Want a trusted and rigorous process behind your impact claims?

EduEvidence certification system is recognised as best-in-class, seamless and partially automated, operating through a rigorous double-validation process agreed in 2023 by an international consortium of scholars, practitioners, industry leaders, and policy-makers. Certification assures schools, funders and policymakers that a product’s impact claims are independently validated.

Need better market access globally?

Data on certified companies feed into ISTE’s EdTech Index, Skolon’s Index, and lists of recommended EdTech solutions used by national governments and UN Agencies. This gives certified products unprecedented visibility and access to procurement teams and users.

Looking for guidance to continuously improve your product?

Beyond recognition, EduEvidence provides structured self-assessment and feedback, helping companies identify strengths and address gaps across efficacy, equity, ethics, and sustainability dimensions, leading to stronger products. EduEvidence network of approved research partners facilitates collaborations between qualified researchers and companies serious about their educational impact.

Want to save time and resources if you already have certifications?

For companies that already hold related certifications, EduEvidence’s equivalence scheme reduces duplication. If you hold a recent certification by ISTE, LearnPlatform by Instructure, LXD Research, EdTech Tulna, Gutesiegel Apps Austria, 1EdTech and many others (see the full list on our website), you can get automatically re-certified under our partnership re-certification scheme. EduEvidence thus streamlines the certification process, and offers a cost-efficient way to gain global recognition under a trusted framework.

Want credibility with buyers and funders?

EduEvidence is trusted by UN agencies and national procurement teams worldwide. EduEvidence certification process was developed by a global consortium of representatives including World Bank, World Benchmarking Alliance, EdTech Teacher and an international group of researchers who published the details in leading peer-reviewed journals (Nature and Computers & Education).

Need proof your impact claims hold up?

Certification uses a rigorous double-validation process: each submission for certification is sent to an independent validator who makes a recommendation before EduEvidence awards the certification. We operate according to publicly available criteria and train our validators according to a rigorous inter-rater reliability process. Validators are researchers and educators who are trained on the criteria. They are compensated for their time from the fees we charge for each certification.

Looking for more visibility?

Certified products are listed with their certifications in Clever and ClassLink. Clever covers more than 110,000 schools, including 95 of the largest 100 districts in USA. ClassLink empowers 22 million students and staff in over 3,000 school systems. Skolon has a wide coverage in Europe. In addition, we share the certification data with leading national catalogues of recommended solutions globally.

How do we prove our product positively affect learning outcomes?

EduEvidence requires that the tool has evidence grounded in research, typically via empirical studies keyed to a theoretical rationale.

Which studies or what kind of studies would be sufficient to prove impact on learning outcomes or other intended metrics?

For the efficacy strands EduEvidence expects empirical evidence from controlled or quasi-controlled studies. For effectiveness, we expect studies conducted with teachers and users in participatory research.

Is our internal studies sufficient to get certified?

We validate the submitted evidece with a validator (distinct from the developer/research partner), assessed against the ICEIE/eduevidence criteria.

How do we measure, monitor, and report equity (i.e. differential impact across demographic groups)?

The Equity dimension requires documentation showing how the product works (or is designed) for underserved or diverse learners, how any disparities are addressed, and how access is ensured. EduEvidence reviews this documentation (or described alignment) in those strands.

How can we prove we are an ethical sound EdTech, with safeguards such as data privacy, user consent, algorithmic fairness and transparency in place?

EduEvidence launched a specific Ethics certification strand in 2025 to assess ethical practices (data protection, user‐centric design, transparency).

How can we document environmental impact or responsible design?

The Environment strand asks companies to show practices (in operations, product design, resource usage) and documentation (e.g. carbon footprint, environmental cost/mitigation).

If we already hold another certification (e.g. ISTE, Digital Promise, etc.), can that be recognized (equated) by EduEvidence?

Yes — EduEvidence has an equivalence certification scheme: certain existing recognized certifications may be mapped (“re-certified”) under EduEvidence’s criteria, reducing the need to duplicate work.

How do we manage versioning and updates of our product so that the certified version remains valid (or re-certification is feasible)?

Certificates must specify the exact version evaluated, and version changes trigger version checks. Certification is valid for two years, after which re-certification is required.

What is the process, timeline, and cost structure (including validation and certification fees) to go through EduEvidence certification (and re-certification)?

The process includes a free self-assessment, submission of evidence, validation by independent researchers, issuance of certificate and badge. Certification is valid for two years. Fees include admin/validation fees and is currently discounted to only $250.

What happens if we don’t yet have rigorous external empirical studies—can we still apply?

Yes. EduEvidence allows that you can apply even with internal or partner-conducted studies, but these needs to be validated. You can also work with a research partner to prepare your evidence portfolio, such as Learn Platform by Instructure, LXD Design or WiKIT/ICEI (International Centre for EdTech Impact).

How is the “Validator” selected, and how independent are they from the Eduevidence tem?

Validators are research organizations with qualified PhD researchers, familiar with ICEIE criteria, and independent of the provider. The Validator reviews evidence submitted by the EdTech provider and recommends a certification.

Can we get a partial certification (e.g. in some strands but not others)?

Yes. A company may achieve different levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold) in different strands. You might get Gold in Efficacy but Bronze in Environment, for instance.

How often must we re-certify, and what is involved in the re-certification?

The certification is valid for two years. After that, you must apply for re-certification, updating your evidence and passing version checks. Re-certification costs are lower, depending on changes.

How do I register my product?

It is free to register your company and product in the database, but there is a fee for the certifications. Click here to open the step-by-step procedure.

What market credibility or recognition does an EduEvidence certification bring (i.e. how will customers or funders perceive it)?

EduEvidence is positioned as an international, research-based standard. Certified products are listed publicly. It also uses equivalence to map other recognized certifications (e.g. ISTE+ASCD) for automatic recertification.

How rigorous is the certification process, and can we trust the validity of the badge?

The process includes independent validation by research organizations, two-step review, specification of product version, and alignment with international research standards.

Does the certification ensure that the tool works in local, “real-world” conditions (not just in ideal trials)?

EduEvidence distinguishes between efficacy (controlled) and effectiveness (real-world) strands. Therefore, for real-world trust, one would look for certification in the “effectiveness” strand.

Is the certification valid for the current product version (i.e. when updates occur)?

Yes — certification is tied to a specific version, and versioning rules and checks are part of the process. Updates may require version checks or re-certification.

How does this certification compare to other mainstream certifications (e.g. ISTE, Digital Promise, Tulna and other certifications)?

EduEvidence explicitly includes an equivalence scheme: it reviews and consolidates other certifications (ISTE+ASCD, etc.) under its international benchmark to avoid duplication and simplify procurement decisions.

Does the certification account for equity, ethics, and environmental impacts, beyond mere academic outcomes?

Yes. The 5E framework covers not only efficacy/effectiveness, but also Equity, Ethics, and Environment. EduEvidence has introduced an ethics certification and expects documentation or alignment in the equity and environment strands.
